Soccer Positions

With soccer game getting intense day by day the soccer positions on field change dynamically based on game plan. In modern soccer game players are trained for more then one soccer positions, this is to ensure they don’t get typed in one role.

Also it throws opposition team in confusion when players on soccer field during games change positions. You will be surprised to know sometime new formations are implemented right in middle of the game. This kind of moves and tactics really puts opposite team in confusion.

While Europeans teams depend on fast passes and more on their forwards to carry ball into opposite teems goal. In contrast South American teams such as Brazil and Argentina uses game plan an build their game by passing ball from full back to mid-field and then to forwards. It is common to see full back of South American team coming all the way to opposite goals for taking free kicks or managing attack on opposite team.

On the other hand Asian teams use short passes to build the game. Regrdless of what soccer tactics and formations teams adopt they all change during the game to create confusion for opposite tem.

Having said that still there are some positions which are adopted by all teams, players in those positions may change to other formations or positions during the game.

Let’s start with the position goalkeeping. The person who guards the goal is called goalkeeper. The role of Goalkeeper is to stop ball going from into the net. The goal keepers of both the team are only ones to hold ball in their hand. However they can‘t touch the ball once out of D area marked in front of the goal.

Next in formation are Defenders, depending upon the game plan teams keep 2 or 3 defenders to guard the goal and support Goalkeeper in keeping ball out of the “D” are. The defenders also help in building the game and passing the ball to their forwards as per game plan. Defenders play dual role of defense and offence at some time in game.

After defender comes specialist positions Sweeper and Stoper. These positions are very important as the player playing in these positions is master minding the entire game. The person playing at this position is coordinating between fullback or defenders and forwards.

Last in formations come forwards. The payers playing in these positions are fast and work to get ball closer to opponent’s goal. They wait for pass from sweeper or defenders to take ball to opposite side’s goal. Usually teams keep 2 or 3 forwards to mount pressure on opposite team. However when time is short and team is behind in goals as cocmpared to opposite team you will see many players moving to forward position to mount pressure.

All these positions are relative am dynamic and change based on game plan and against team strength. However these are the main soccer positions used in game.
